A Brief History of Chinuch Atzmai
Chinuch Atmzai, literally translated as “independent education,” is an alternative education system in Eretz Yisroel run by Gedolei Yisroel and tailored to serve the educational needs of both the Shomer Torah and secular communities of Israel.
In addition to the Beis Yaakov schools for girls, Talmud Torah, Cheder and Yeshiva Ketana schools for boys, kiruv schools where established within the Chinuch Atzmai network as well. These schools offer a genuine Torah education to secular children whose parents want to give them the education they were not fortunate enough to receive during their own childhood.
For several decades the schools received a large portion of their funding from the state, with additional funds supplemented by donors across the globe. But in May of 2006 the secular movement in Israel succeeded in maliciously cutting state funds to both the schools and the transportation services which they had previously heavily funded for Chinuch Atzmai talmidim. Literally overnight, Chinuch Atzmai was confronted with a multi-million dollar deficit in its transportation budget!
A Brief Overview of Keren Kiruv’s Mission
Over the past decade Chinuch Atzmai has been faced with the challenge of providing its talmidim with the education they need as well as transportation to and from school, especially for those who attend the network’s kiruv institutions. Without affordable schools and a way to get to and from them, these children – from secular, low-income families - would have no choice but to attend state-run secular schools, falling prey to their agenda, poor conditions and influences, chas v’shalom.
In an effort to solve this crisis, including the busing situation, Harav Eliyashiv zt"l declared a kol koreh to establish the “Keren Lisiyua Has’aot LeTalmidei Chinuch Atzmai” fund. Known as the Keren Kiruv Fund, it was founded in 2006 by Harav Eliyashiv zt"l, Harav Michel Yehuda Lefkovitz zt"l, and yblch”t Harav Aron Leib Shteinman shlit”a. The fund continues to be directed and endorsed by the Gedolei Hador in both Eretz Yisroel and America, including Maran Rosh Yeshiva Rav Aharon Leib Shteinman, Rav Nissim Karelitz and Rav Chaim Kanievsky.
Keren Kiruv’s mission, which was founded on the ideal of providing a genuine Torah education to all Jewish children in Eretz Yisroel, received immediate support from prominent baalei tzedakah across the globe. But even with their sizable donations, the fund is in a deficit due to the rapid growth rate of Chinuch Atzmai’s Kiruv Schools – a testament to the institution’s success!
Gedolei Yisroel recognized the threat of the government’s attempt to deny these children the opportunity to receive a genuine Torah education as a malicious effort to thwart its success and growth, jeopardizing the Torah education of tens of thousands of children.
The most pressing need currently is for the transportation network. Funded primarily by private donors, Keren Kiruv provides transportation to over 20,000 children each day from 215 locations across the country to more than a one hundred Torah schools. The schools are ready to educate them, but without the support of Keren Kiruv’s donors, the students would have no way of reaching them!
Gedolei Yisroel are calling on YOU to save a Neshama
The challenge of dealing with the kiruv schools’ growth-rates, exacerbated by the attack of secularists in the government who are trying to prevent the growth of yiddishkeit in Eretz Yisroel, has resulted in an immediate threat of the schools. Without adequate funding the bus companies that transport the children will cease providing these important services. Harav Aharon Leib Shteinman, Harav Nissim Karelitz, Harav Chaim Kanievsky, Harav Gershon Edelstein, Harav Dov Landau and Harav Yaakov Edelstein, along with gedolim in the US, have characterized the crisis as an Eis Tzarah L’yaakov.
The gedolim have declared it a chov kodosh – a sacred obligation – for each and every family in Eretz Yisroel and around the world to support at least one child’s transportation to a Chinuch Atzmai Kiruv school. It's important to understand that this relatively small financial obligation on your part may be all that is needed for secular parents to keep their children out of the secular state-run education system.
Tens of thousands of children across Eretz Yisroel depend on Keren Kiruv’s services to access a Torah Education at Chinuch Atzmai schools. Without their services these students’ educational options would be limited to a secular one at their local public school. Gedolei Yisroel are calling on you to keep these children on the Derech, literally and figuratively!
